A Direct Access Barrister allows members of the public to instruct them without the need to instruct a solicitor. The Direct Access Barrister will deal with the client from start to finish and will have complete control of their case. Thousands of barristers are now qualified to work directly with clients in this way, which can be less expensive than instructing them via a solicitor. Direct Access Barristers can represent you in court, at tribunals, appeal hearings, committee hearings or similar proceedings. As Barristers typically handle the more specific and complex points of a case, they can also give you advice on complex and ad hoc matters including challenges to an area of law.

Please note that the majority of a solicitor’s work will take place outside of court, although there may be times when they are required to attend. A barrister will represent their clients in court and are often called upon to provide specialist advice in the legal practice area they specialise in.
